My Teaching Philosophy

My teaching philosophy begins with the passion I have for the instrument. Early in my playing career I developed a love for performing which then expanded into a passion for teaching.

One of the most important aspects of my philosophy includes teaching students to listen critically and to lead them to respond accordingly. To help the student reach this goal, I first make certain that the student understands a task intellectually as well as aurally. This process includes modelling as well as use of the Socratic Method to help them arrive at the answers themselves.

Another aspect of my teaching philosophy is to help students achieve realistic short term and long term goals. Goals are discussed at the beginning of the semester (or term) and then a plan is created with the student to ensure success in achieving the goals. Learning how to practice is crucial for musical growth and growth of flute technique. It is essential for students to understand the implications of practicing effectively as well as the implications of practicing ineffectively.

It is important that a well-informed teacher incorporates music theory and music history within the context of the piece the student is studying. I believe that lessons at the college level must integrate other areas of music study in order to encourage the maximum musical growth in each student.

My teachers constantly inspired me as a student, not only with their captivating performances, but also in their service to the community. They are the models for how I teach, perform, and serve in my community. As I remember feelings for each of my teachers, I too want to be a model, to inspire musical development and to instill a passion for music that will encourage each student to share with the world.
